Jim Figliulo wins $25M verdict for 101-year-old Evergreen Park resident.

Twenty-Five Million Dollars ($25,000,000) was the amount a Cook County jury awarded on May 5, 2009 to a Figliulo & Silverman, P.C. client who faced losing her property to the Village of Evergreen Park through eminent domain. Since 1923 Ms. Anna Mae (“Babe”) Ahern and her family have owned and operated a 95 acre golf course in Evergreen Park, Illinois. Steve Viz obtained a $4.176 million jury award in an eminent domain case.

It involved an eight acre industrial property in Chicago and it was taken by ComEd for a new power station. The trial lasted a week and the jury deliberated for 3 hours. The verdict was nearly $1.2 million more than the value ascribed to the land by one of ComEd's appraisers.

Figliulo and Silverman client, Koch Industries, has offered a position to partner Ryan Stiles.

Koch is one of the largest private companies in America, and employs approximately 70,000 individuals in over 60 countries. Ryan has accepted the offer and will soon be joining Koch as Senior Counsel for Litigation in Wichita.

Last Fall, Jim Figliulo obtained a jury verdict of $41.7 million on behalf of Koch against BP Amoco after an eight week trial. That verdict was one of the highest in the United States in 2009.

The 7th Circuit issues an important opinion on loss causation in accounting malpractice case.

The Court affirms summary judgment in favor of Figliulo & Silverman's client, KPMG, against a bankruptcy Trustee who sought over $600 million in damages based on a damage theory, which the Court rejected as "outlandish". After 4 years of litigation this case was brought to a successful conclusion. The Court went on to issue a separate opinion ordering the Trustee's counsel to pay KPMG's attorneys' fees and expenses as a sanction for a frivolous appeal.

Chief Justice Thomas Fitzgerald appoints Jim Figliulo to be the Illinois Liaison to the America Jury Project Commission of the ABA.
