For over twenty years, Carl Gigante has been involved in issues associated with land valuation and the power of government to take private property for a public use, otherwise known as eminent domain. As a partner in the firm of Figliulo & Silverman, he now devotes nearly his entire practice to eminent domain law. Carl has represented property owners against the state, county and municipal governments in eminent domain proceedings and has been involved in several cases where the governmental body has abandoned or dismissed its case against the owner.

In those cases that were not dismissed, he has obtained, through settlement or trial, numerous compensation awards that far exceed the amount of money initially offered to the owner. In the past year, Carl has recovered over $7 million on behalf of his clients in eminent domain cases. Currently, he is involved in cases where the amount of compensation at issue exceeds $40 million.

Carl has handled eminent domain cases in Cook County and the six collar counties of northeastern Illinois, representing owners of property ranging from large rural tracts of land to downtown office buildings. He has represented commercial landlords as well as tenants in eminent domain proceedings and has also served as eminent domain counsel for various public bodies.

Carl graduated from Fenwick High School, attended Northwestern University, and graduated magna cum laude in 1980 from Loyola University. He also received his law degree from Loyola School of Law in 1983. During law school, he was a member of the Loyola Law Journal, served as a judicial extern to the late federal Judge Nicholas Bua, and argued a case before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Carl has written on eminent domain for the American Bar Association and co-authored a chapter concerning eminent domain for the Illinois Continuing Legal Education Program. He is married with four children.
